Phi Lao Huong is a pioneer for Vietnamese kiting and surfing. He is one of the first locals to work in the kite industry in Mui Ne, Vietnam. And has represented his country more than once and in more than one discipline. To find out more about this new additon to the Crazy Fly Team read below.
Question: What is you name and where are you from?
Phi Lao Huong, I’m from Mui Ne Vietnam, which is 200km north of Ho Chi Minh City.
Question: How long have you been kitesurfing for?
Phi: I started kitesurfing 9years ago. My brother Phong was the first Vietnamese person to learn to kitesurf and I was the third.
Question: What other sports are you involved in?
Soccer, Poker, Tennis, Surfing, Stand-up Paddle, Volleyball
Question: What is your job?
My job is teaching kitesurfing for the last seven years and I also have a Kite and Surf shop here in Mui Ne called the Ocean Shop. It is the first Vietnamese owned and operated surf shop.
Question: How long have you been Sponsored for ?
I was first sponsored for four years ago, but have been sponsored by Crazy Fly for the last year.
Question: What is your best achievement?
I have competed in the KTA (kiteboarding tour asia)2010. The Placed 3rd overall. In the China round I won the Freestyle competition and second in the race. Here in the Vietnam round I was third in the freestyle and third in the race and the Philipines I was 4th in the freestyle.
I have also represented Vietnam in the Asian games for surfing in 2009 at Bali.
Questions: It sounds like the ocean has been good to you?
Yes, I think if it wasn’t for kitesurfing I would be a fisherman like my father.
Question: Do you consider yourself a role model for younger people in your community?
I guess so, lots of the children here approach me to teach them kiting. I try and teach as may of the kids around here as possible. It is really good for the children to have access to so many kites here in Mui Ne. Lots kids are getting into the sport and it gives them lots more opportunities to get involved in tourism.
Question: What about your family, you talked about your brother Phong. Is all you family involved in kitesurfing in Mui Ne?
I have four brothers and we all kitesurf and work in the kitesurfing industry in Mui Ne.
Question: What are you goals for this year?
To introduce more Vietnamese people to kiting and surfing. To compete in the KTA again. I would also like to focus on racing and represent Vietnam in the Olympics should racing become an Olympic event in the future.

I would like to thank all the people that have given me support of the last nine years and help me get to where I am today.
